Background:

Invented in the early 1920’s, cycloidal gear drives use a specially designed cam based on an epicycloidal curve and pins and rollers for power transmission in contrast to traditional gears based on the involute tooth form.

Operating Principle:

The Cycloidal drive consists of 4 main components- an input shaft, a cycloidal cam disc eccentrically mounted on the input shaft, a set of pins or rollers mounted around the cam, and an output shaft. Motion is transmitted between the input and output shaft purely by rolling friction between the cams, rollers and pins. This leads to a high efficiency drive unlike traditional planetary gears using involute teeth which involve sliding friction.
